1. Free Roof Terrace

T Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a large department store next to the Rialto Bridge with a large terrace on its roof. Great spot to watch the sunset during winter as the sun sets early enough when the terrace is still open. This is one of my personal favourite places to watch the sunset in Venice as the views over the city are amazing. Entrance onto the terrace is free, you’ll just need to reserve a time slot in advance on their website here.

2. Zattere

The ‘Fondamenta delle Zattere’ is the promenade which runs along the southern waterfront of the island. It is a long walkway which looks out across the Giudecca canal and Giudecca island opposite Venice. This promenade is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Venice.

3. Terrazza Danieli

One of the more exclusive spots to watch the sunset in Venice is from the Danieli Terrace. The Hotel Danieli is a luxurious hotel with a rooftop restaurant and terrace which offers views of St. Mark’s Basin, San Giorgio Maggiore island, and the Madonna della Salute church.

4. Riva degli Schiavoni

If the Hotel Danieli Terrace is outside of your budget, the sunset can also be enjoyed from the ground level outside the hotel. The Riva degli Schiavoni is the promenade which runs along the waterfront from the Doge’s Palace to the public gardens. From this promenade you can enjoy great out across the water with views of San Giorgio Maggiore island opposite, as well as the Madonna della Salute Church which the sun sets behind during the winter.

5. San Giorgio Maggiore

Another place to watch the sunset is from the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, which is located opposite the Doge’s Palace. You can reach the island with just a short ride on one of the city’s public transport boats (vaporetto).

6. Accademia Bridge

The Accademia Bridge is located in the south of the city. This large wooden bridge is one of only four bridges which cross the Grand Canal, the city’s main waterway. The bridge has great views in both directions, making it a great spot to enjoy the changing sky during sunset. You won’t be able to see the sun after it drops below the buildings, but this is still a great spot to hang out for the sunset.

7. Grand Canal

Another way to enjoy the sunset in Venice is from various points along the Grand Canal. There are numerous wooden jetties along the Grand Canal where you can sit to enjoy sunset. Although you won’t be able to see the sun actually set once it lowers past the buildings, this is a really enjoyable way to spend an evening in Venice regardless.

8. Burano

Burano is a beautiful little island located to the north of Venice in the Venetian lagoon. This little fishing village is a popular day trip destination due to it’s vibrant multi-coloured houses. There are lots of great things to see and do on Burano, and to finish off the day it’s also a great spot for watching the sunset.

9. Murano

Murano is another popular island in the Venetian lagoon for visitors to Venice. The island is famous worldwide for its production of Murano glass. There’s lots to see and do on Murano, and you can even attend a glass-blowing demonstration to see Murano glass being made for yourself. At the end of the day Murano is also a great location for watching the sun as it sets over Venice.

10. Rialto

The Rialto Bridge is another popular spot to check out during sunset. From the bridge you can watch the sun start to set in the sky, the colours reflecting on the Grand Canal below.
